I got this unit after my Aiwa head unit gave out. I wanted a head unit with built-in HD radio and iPod playback. This radio was the best value I could find that had those capabilities. The radio sounds good, there is a small but noticeable improvement between HD stations and regular. Side note: if you want HD radio, make sure to buy a unit that has an HD tuner built in, not 'HD ready', which means you have to buy a separate HD tuner. Another nice touch with the radio (that I haven't actually tried yet) is the option of 'tagging' a song you hear on the radio while you have your iPod plugged in, which will prompt you to purchase that song later. The iPod playback works well, I use it with my iPhone 3G (running iOS 4.0) and it works fine, it can be controlled through the radio or else you can use the controls in the phone itself (Sony calls this 'passenger mode' or something like that). It will also charge my phone even if I'm listening to something other than iPod. CD player also works well. I like the controls, they're pretty easy to read, and the volume control knob has a very nice feel to it, soft rubber grip, nice clicky feel as you turn the knob. There is also ability to control output to the subwoofer from the head unit. This radio has a lot of features I haven't tried yet. In summary:

Cons:
The only complaint I would have about this unit is that if you're listening to the radio, and the station you're listening to broadcasts both HD and standard, and if you're in an area with weak signal for the HD station, sometimes the radio will quickly shift between HD and standard and back, causing a slight pause in the music that's annoying. I wish Sony would have done something to ensure that didn't happen.

Just installed this radio in my 98 S-10. Works great, my only complaint is the controls are cramped. Hard to hit the right button while driving. Other than that I love it.

First off, I must say I have never thought too highly of Sony car audio. They usually sound average at best and quickly die on you. I've always been an Alpine guy myself and this unit actually replaced an older Alpine unit in my car. Overall I must say that I am highly satisfied with this Sony receiver and more than impressed with the features. You wont win any competitions with this unit, but it certainly sounds nice and more than comparable with my Alpine. My main reason for purchasing this unit is because I wanted something with HD radio built in. (The alpine add on HD radio cost more than this whole Sony stereo!) The ipod controls work much better than my aging Alpine though I find that the wire in the front in bothersome. I prefer the wire in the rear and placing the ipod in the glovebox. As for the faceplate, the lighting is nice but on the whole it feels cheaper than my 5 year old Alpine. I really dont like the look too much but its because it feels out of place in my car. Overall though my complaints are minor. This unit has a great price as well as great features. Overall it was a great purchase and would highly recommend it to someone on a budget or just looking for an upgrade over their stock radio.

Be warned! I upgraded my 3GS to IOS4 this morning and now the unit no longer works via USB to my iphone. It just flashes READ endlessly.
Contacting Sony and Apple support... I'll update if I get it working.
Update:
Based on the discussions here, [...] , I did a full reset of the iPhone while connected to the stereo. It then began to work again...
I'll leave the review at 1 star for now, and if it continues to work, will upgrade it to 3 or 4.

This unit has everything I wanted - CD, AUX in, USB, plus HD radio. I originally didn't care about the HD radio, but turns out it is one of the best features. When it locks into HD stations, the sound quality is so much better. I've used the unit with CDs and several MP3 players including flash drive in the USB, and it works very well. Very happy with the unit for the price I paid.
