Nice unit July 16, 2010 Gazoo I bought this mainly for the bluetooth calling capabilities. The sound is amazing! People can't even tell I'm using it. You definitely have to use the included microphone though, and make sure its placement is well thought out (mine was installed at the top of the drivers side pillar near the visor.) Has good controls and the remote is very detailed, albeit slightly large (almost like a "house stereo" remote.) I paired it with my iPhone 4 and it sounds great. I haven't tried the iphone cable connection or bluetooth streaming yet, but the USB is fantastic (I used a tiny 16GB USB stick.) I haven't tried the phone book functions yet either, but iPhone voice command works well.
My only complaint would be there's no quick and easy way to get to the calling menu right away..it's a 3-4 step process make a call. However, when receiving a call it's extremely simple.
**Update**
iPhone 4 via USB works great, but like another reviewer said, it's better to control it from the phone than the head unit if you have lots of songs. I also ran into a problem with the USB drive. It seems that even though windows says I've put all my songs on the 16GB USB drive, the head unit only sees some. I think I found the problem..when I was dragging and dropping music onto the drive, I was running like 3 different windows explorer windows from 3 different sources. It doesn't like this. You have to load one group of files/music at a time. When that's done, do the next or else it only sees the songs you loaded until you started another concurrent file source. It could just be Vista x86 acting up, but that's what I ran into. I was going to try loading it from Ubuntu, but I don't have the time or patience.
Also, using the remote, you can get to the calls quick, but as stated above you can't get there without a few step using just the head unit and not the remote.
Very Pleased June 3, 2010 Walter D. Fenyk 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Purchased this unit for a 98 pathfinder - really just wanted to add Bluetooth and iPod. Have only been playing with it for a short time but thought i would offer some feedback for others looking at the unit. Overall i am very satisfied with the unit and for the price i paid there is no reason to complain. (using the exisitng Bose amp and speakers that were factory installed)
Flaws:
1. iPod control from the head unit is basically useless if you have alot of music. Solution just control the music from the ipod. use the head unit to advance songs but again almost impossible to find the song you want when you have several thousand songs. having playlists created makes it a bit easier. Sony could have done a much better job with the ipod interface.
2. Display - truely is tough to see in daylight. turning off the background graphics helped some but just very hard to see. Others have reported this.
3. Phone book - had no trouble loading my phone book off my Blackberry Storm. However, i have a very large list of contacts and they did not fit into the units memory. I need to do a bit of research here to find out the deal. Solution - just browse the phonebook vs loading it. And only loading the numbers of contacts that i care to have in the unit.
Likes:
1. Bluetooth phone is very good - mic sensitivity can be adjusted and very clear for hands free.
2. Bluetooth streaming music - really impressed here- dont always have my ipod with me - but always have my blackberry where i have a few thousand songs stored. if your phone supports stereo Bluetooth you can stream music directly to the unit.
Great HU, Love having BT as a part of the stereo May 15, 2010 Ricky B. Smith (Charleston SC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
BLUF: Very satisfied, hands free calling works great, ipod interface is more than adequate, MP3 data discs and IPODS sounds great, EQ tuning options are profound but not overwhelming, BT audio streaming is a fun option. Minor issues with Palm Pre functions (PB, charging)
Burns and Mayer's review were spot on and very good reviews just wanted to throw a few additonal things out there for the consumers. I have had this HU about a month and am completely satisfied for the price. I bought this head unit and had it installed from a local dealer (more than listed here). It was an upgrade from a Pioneer unit my wife got me for my birthday. The poor reviews on the pioneer's interface with the iPOD is what scared me away. So i traded it in. I spent about a hundred more than what my wife did and I got a much better HU. Looked at ALPINES becuase ALPINE has some of the best iPOD interfaces I have seen (just an opinion) however none of the alpines in this price range had built in BT and i couldnt see spending additonal money for add ons. Unfortunately my iPOD didnt work with this HU becuase it is too old however my daughters nano works great and the reviews are spot on. It isnt the best interface but really it is NOT a show stopper either it is more than adequate. Like others have said I have yet to see a HU you didnt have a learning curve with. The controls do take a bit getting used to esp if you are coming from a factory stereo. I installed this in a 06 GMC Sierra P/U. I was nervous about going from a double din opening to the single din but with the dash kit it looks ok and now i have additional storage cubby. The face plate is a bit "spongy" but that is me being really picky.
Sound. Again others reviews are spot on. Using bluetooth audio and the aux jack works if your in a pinch but sound is not as good as playing music from the IPOD through the USB. I have paired it with my Palm Pre and had very little complication pairing and it is pretty cool to use pandora on my phone then stream it through my car stereo. It is also nice to have it pair automaticaly when i get into my truck. I have also noticed that CD's that are ripped as data discs sound far better than creating a disc straight for a traditional cd player. You get a lot more music and it sounds better. I set my HU with the EQ set at "XPLOD" and DM+ at "+2" and this makes my factory speakers scream pretty good. Cant wait to get a new IPOD!
Calling. Unfortunately my palm doesnt have voice dialing and I am having issues with the phone book but I havent messed with it as much as I should and i think this is more indicative of the phone not the head unit. However the controls on the HU work fine and calls sound clear and most people have told me they cant tell I am talking from hands free calling. The dealer installed the mic to my headliner a few inches from my mirror and it picks up my voice with me talking at normal voice at the default settings.
Display. I dont agree with the bad display reviews. I have no issues with the display and everything works great in both the day and the night. Even the white light on the dial doesnt bother me.
My annoyance is with my Pre, HU interface. I like using the USB for a charger (car chargers are $30) for my phone and the HU routinely gives me a "not supported" beep when i scroll through the sources. But after i tell the phone to "just charge" and move past the "not supported" it charges fine. Using the Pre like an IPOD aka Media Sync doesnt work. (or i havent figured it out) my next step is to try and load some music and play it through the USB.
Nice Receiver May 15, 2010 H. S. Bawa This stereo is awesome and install was simple. I had little tough time getting wire harness for my car but finally found it. Music plays very well from CD, USB stick, Auxiliary (from media devices) and Bluetooth streaming. Bluetooth connectivity with my phone very simple and audio is very clear and handles very well without the need of external microphone that came with this device. Accessing address book from my phone using PBAP was simple and easy. Music continues from media stick where it left earlier.
Clock Display is very small. Display color is blue and I would have loved it to be red. I heard that display color could be changed but didn't work that way ... but not a big deal.
Overall sound is sweet and crisp clear and bass sound is awesome. Works with existing stock speakers very well. Even at the half of the volume setting, music is very loud.
About what I expected for the price April 11, 2010 Mike Thompson (CT USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was dead set on getting a new Alpine HU but times are tough and can't really justify spending ~$600, no matter how good and nice it is. So I needed a solid HU with Bluetooth support and as such this units does not disappoint. It found and paired my N1 in a flash and pairs it up without a hitch every time I get into the car. The sound is as clear as BT EDR allows (which is not bad at all), the phone works great, external mic works well and all is dandy.
The menu navigation system is very adequate, faceplate design is not really my cup of tea with chrome this and bulge that but that's a minor quip and I certainly knew what I was buying. I would have given it 5 stars because for the price it delivers on its promises.
So what's wrong?
1). The screen is hard to read during the day. At night its the opposite. There is a DIMMER wire which on properly designed units dims the backlight. Apparently the 16 yo who was responsible for the design decided that only the display will be dimmed and all other controls will glare at you full blast - because they're so cool. None cooler than the stupid bright white ring around the volume/control knob. As such the dimmer control is practically useless 'cause the display is the least of the problem.
2). I'm all fine with multifunction buttons, space is limited but the same 16 yo decided that illuminating 1-6 at night will suffice and now you need to remember which one of those tiny buttons is Play/Pause. I don't use it really but the design of the remote is equally idiotic leaving you completely baffled as to what to press to play/control the music. Though it could be that I'm just too old to grasp the concepts.
3). To install/remove the faceplate is somewhat of a struggle. Granted I rarely if ever do it so no biggie, but the few times I did thus far I though I was going to break it or it fell down because it did not clip on fully.
On a whole however, I'm pretty happy with it, sounds great and does what I was truly after.
