5 out of 5 stars Flexible, great sound quality, sleek and easy to use   January 4, 2009

I love my new Logitech Squeezebox Duet system. It took a little time to set up but after I had got my software firewall issues fixed it worked like a dream. In fact i'm so pleased with it I purchased an additional receiver unit for another room. I also use my iPhone with software from the Apple App Store to act as a handy second control unit (though for those of you with an iPhone already and tempted to just get a reciever ... don't do it - the Squeezebox control unit that comes with the Duet systems is well worth it!).

My set up is as follows:

- 1x Logitech Sqeezebox control unit (comes with the Duet system)
- 2x Logitech Squeezebox receivers (1x comes with the Duet system - I purchased the other seperately)
- Receiver ONE is in my sitting room and is connected to a Logitech Z-2300 THX Certified speaker system
- Receiver TWO is in my conservatory and connected via Powerline Ethernet (i.e. over my home electricity system from the router) as Wifi didn't work - works great though!
- Music is stored on the hard-drive of my home computer in WMA format (typically 192kbps) and MP3 format (typically 320kbps) - approx 400 albums all work great
- Belkin MIMO Wireless G+ ADSL Router
- Standard BT ADSL 512k internet connection
- McAfee Firewall / Security Center
- Microsoft Vista

The bottom line: the benefits I value most are a) the outstanding sound quality and b) the ease of use of the Logitech Squeezebox Duet system once you have it up and running. Squeezebox doesn't play DRM protected music though so keep this in mind before purchasing. In conclusion, if you are into your music and have a large collection this is great value for money. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars seven weeks and it still isn't working   December 30, 2008

all these positive reviews are making me quite jealous. this is no doubt a good machine IF you can get it to work. I'd like to know how many they've had returned when people simply can't get them to work properly. I've had mine seven weeks now and have been in constant contact with the support team. Mine will play internet radio but despite many many attempts at different fixes, it will not find my personal music collection via squeezecentre.

I would definitely avoid this machine unless you are VERY technically confident. I certainly wish I'd never bought one.

5 out of 5 stars My music is now free   December 18, 2008

I got this setup within 30 minutes as advertised. The hardware is flawless however setting up the software could be a problem depending on your platform. I'm using Windows Home Server and there is a slight problem with SqueezeCenter and PVConnect fighting for port 9000 but this is fixed with a small alteration to preferences file.

My music is now free to be played remotely with either the controller or at my laptop with SqueezeCenter. The remote is very responsive and so far I have had no problems playing local music. The artwork once cached also displays quickly (with some slight compression) and adds to a more tangible feel of your music. Some internet radio channels don't work but all my favourites do so not a problem. What I am most impressed with is the fact that this controller really is a computer; upgrades just keep coming.

Despite the small problems I have still awarded 5 stars because it works as I expect and the problems do not affect me. If your networking or setup skills are not great it could prove a little challenge but there is a LOT of support on the Squeezebox site.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect   December 12, 2008

I have been waiting for a product like this for what seems like ages. An elegant way of getting itunes off your computer wirelessly and playing the songs in different rooms throughout the house. The previous solutions have either been stupidly expensive (eg sonos) or have looked like 1980s pc hardware.
Firstly the duet looks good. The handset essentially looks like an ipod and has a nice docking station (chrome and black laquer)into which it slots to charge. It wirelessly connects to another box which you plug into any amplifier to play your tunes (which also looks good).
Set up I found very easy. First download the squeezebox software onto your computer from their website and tell it where you music folder is. Next plug box into amplifier and turn it on. It really was that simple. Most of the duets controls are very intuitive like an ipod.
The music sounds good via this system.
The wireless connection I have found to be fine no better and no worse than any other wireless hardware I have.
What lets it down for me slightly is:
1) the handset doesnt fit perfectly into the docking station ( a little loose) hence sometimes it charges and sometimes it doesn't.
2) the scroll wheel on the duet is nowhere near as good as an ipod. The duets wheel although looking like an ipods is actually mechanical which physically turns. (presumably apple have the patent on their superior touch sensitive version). Once you appreciate the fact that it requires physical turning as opposed to the light touch of an ipod it works ok but it is not as elegant or sensetive.
3) music bought via itunes (non itunes plus)is drm protected and therefore cannot be played via this. I know you can remove the write protection via burning a cd and then copying it but it is a pain. (this is apples fault not logitechs)
Overall therefore a good product but not quite perfect yet and it would be nice if they did a version with a built in amplifier which you could connect straight to some speakers but as yet they dont.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept but still someway to go   December 5, 2008

I already had a Squeezebox 3 and was delighted with it's audio performance and excellent integration with my ITunes held library of around 22.5k tracks.

I have added a Duet.

The Duet is a great concept and a quality piece of kit. However, stability of the software has been an issue on the Duet and I am still frequently embarrassed by pauses and inexplicable track jumps. Reading the forums it is clear that I'm not alone and you should bear in mind that this product still leaning towards the enthusiast market. It's a long way from plug 'n play.

It is also worth noting that my remote's charging unit exploded three weeks ago (literally flash, bang... smoke). Three weeks on and I'm still waiting for a replacement. Logitech's support facility and speed of response is VERY slow. Emails and phone calls typically receive empathy and apology but a clear lack of joined up systems and ability to sort out a simple replacement.

Would I buy? Yes, but only if you have some PC and networking knowledge.
