3 out of 5 stars Drop outs on Highway radio   March 4, 2010

I purchased this radio because I was experiencing regular signal drop outs on my car FM radio when tuned to radio 4 - really unlistenable. Possibly this area ST5 has a very poor signal strength.
However the Higway was a vast improvement but still subject to quite regular dropouts.
But considering the size and price and the fact that reception is far better than my far costlier DAB portable used in the kitchen it is a reasonble buy.
But in the 60s and 70s I got a consistent signal on radio 4 Longwave using metal coathangers for aerials.

2 out of 5 stars Built to last a month   February 20, 2010

The Highway. That's where it's likely to end up if your magnetic mount is close to an open window and a passing butterfly happens to cough. In other words the mount is ill conceived and doesn't last more than a month. I wonder if anyone in the Pure design department attended the school physics lesson when they explained the principles of magnetism. Apparently NOT. So after a month of detaching and re-attaching the unit to the mount (not that anyone with an IQ over 10 would actually want to steal it)the unit falls out of love with the mount and that wonderful magnetic attraction turns into repulsion.
I reported the fault to Pure, even explaining what I believed to be the cause. They sent me a new mount. Just like the old one. So much for product development.
Then the metal disc in the back of the unit came unstuck (superglue in short supply?). So I fixed it myself. Two days later the flimsy power supply plug disintegrated and shazzam I now have a pocket DAB radio that I can't use in the car. At this point it got put into my drawer labelled "Mistakes"
Maybe my problems are unique, or maybe people can't be bothered to record the problem. In summary - Nice idea but poorly designed and certainly worth avoiding.

1 out of 5 stars Great idea, but not a lot of use   February 14, 2010

Great idea, but doesn't live up to the promise.

1. I live in heavily populated NW Surrey, 1 mile outside the M25, where my static DAB radio works fine - but the Pure Highway worked fine when I set it up on the drive, but driving the first 100 yards the signal stopped 3 times !
I commute around Surrey and the only station that is always available is Planet Rock - the rest come and go as they feel like.

2. It does NOT tell you this in the manual - if you run the device off batteries it will not transmit to your radio ... Pure do not seem to have a reason that I find believable ! So if you want to use sat nav/charge your mobile/etc as well as Pure Highway you need to buy a cigarette lighter splitter thing as well - not expensive, but not mentioned in the documentation.

3. lots of presets, but only the forst 3 are 1 button touches - the rest you press preset 4, spin the dial to get the preset number you want and then press select .... doesn't sound (or feel) a very safe way of getting those presets (particularly since the dial is not very sensitive)

I would recommend splashing out and getting a proper car DAB radio

i purchased this pure highway to use as a extra receiver in my works van, it worked reasonably well but kept losing signals when mobile in different areas even with an added electronic ariel.
so i have now added it to my home system with the same ariel and it works great its a welcome change of stations and i would recomend the same supplier for good quality products at a reasonable cost.by the way it was a birthday gift from my wife thank you

4 out of 5 stars good, but not perfect   February 5, 2010

I bought this because I like to listen to Radio5 and talksport, and AM reception is just so bad. I have been using the unit for 10 months. Comments/observations:

- the supplied windscreen aerial is poor. I have replaced it with the external magnetic aerial, and driving between Aberdeen and Devon, I now only lose signal momentarily in the Trossachs, and in the Lake District. Approximately 1-2 minutes during a 10 hour journey.I have had that aerial for 8 months now and made 3 round trips scotland-devon and back.
- The windscreen mount did break after about 6 months, it just fell apart at the base. I had removed and remounted it several times before finding the ideal position. The new one is going strong however, I installed it and I have not moved it since. I have had no problem with the magnet at the radio end.
- the FM transmission (Highway unit to the in-car radio) works OK, but i found on a 600 mile journey I had to retune several times to avoid interference with local FM stations. My car is 11 years old and I have no "aux" input socket , so i bought a "cassette adaptor" to connect the Highway directly to the car radio - it works a treat.
- I spent a bit of time routing the cables along grooves in the dashboard and I now have a tidy installation.

Overall I am very happy with the Highway, and for the price and ease of use it has given me DAB in my car very effectively.
