1 out of 5 stars Very badly designed...   March 1, 2010
P. Harlow (Scotland)
I fitted one of these to my car about a year ago and I've regretted it ever since. The easiest way to explain why is simply to list all the things that are wrong with the design;

The LEDs are all far too bright and don't all dim with the headlight-feed, meaning that it's blindingly bright at night - I had to paint over some of the LEDs so I could see at night and it's still too bright!

The colour change options don't change the main display, only the surrounding LEDs, so anything other than blue looks stupid.

The main control knob is far too sensitive and impossible to use unless you're stationary...even then, it's a challenge! The control functions it offers are convoluted and poorly thought through - in fact, the whole interface is badly thought through and unintuitive - selecting preset radio stations is far too complicated an action to carry out on the move and selecting a specific track from a CD is equally impossible unless you stop the car first.

The volume control and the track-shift control are the same control (the main knob again) which means you invariably end up changing track/radio station when you try to adjust the volume or end up muting or setting the volume to deafeningly loud when you try to change tracks/search for a radio station!

The tilt function of the facia panel is pointless - you only ever use it to change CD.

Again, the whole design of the interface is completely unintuitive - passengers are utterly baffled by it when they try to use it (because it's impossible for the driver to carry out even the simplest operations) and I have to keep the (weighty) manual handy in the glovebox at all times.

In short, this head-unit sucks...a lot. The only good thing about it is the remote USB...but you get that with the cheap 9.99 units Lidl's knock out on a regular basis and you'd frankly be better off with one of those.

4 out of 5 stars Great, albeit a tad fiddly   January 20, 2010

Fiddly because of the main navigation wheels. Clicking 5 different directions and spinning for volume is bad enough, but it gets twenty times harder to do when driving. Comes with remote however which can replicate 80% of the functions.

Aside from that, good product. Sounds great and looks alright, even if it is a bit bright.

4 out of 5 stars Atrac can be played if you have walkman only   May 1, 2009
Mr. Nerijus Vasiljevas (London,UK)
I had this unit for a month now, and i think it is ok, a bit too expensive but ok.
It gets very very and i mean very how when you play music on medium volume, you can fry eggs easy on the back of this unit, so i had to put a little fan the back of it (helps a bit)
+ remote, easy to use, powerful, usb.
- heat, usb failures sometimes, light on the joystick does not dim(or change colour), too bright at night.

So i think this is a good HU from sony but with the price tag like that it gets too hot and could change screen colour to reb/blue/green and joystick surround.
Would i recommend it to someone ? YES
Would i buy one again ? Same one NO , another YES.

The CDX GT929U was easy to fit, and has a clear punchy sound, very impressed good graphics & Display well worth the money, if you read the manual its easy to set the levels. all i want to do is go driving.

4 out of 5 stars Good, room for improvement   December 11, 2008

Bought this one as I liked the cable from rear to position USB port where I wanted it and liked the idea of the slide down front for CD insertion (very cute :) ).

I don't normally bother reviewing items but felled compelled to after the last review.

The control still can be a bit over sensitive but once you get the hand of it, it works well. Regarding too much fiddling while driving, the sheer number of options this unit offers I think you'd be daft to try and adjust the fiddly options while driving.

The options that are useful to switch quickly while driving are easy to switch (skip tracks, volume, change between radio/CD/mp3 etc).

The background image can be changed/switched off easily(read the manual - it's all in there in plain English).

One bug bear I do have is not yet found options to change display mode when playing mp3s. Rather than the default of showing the artist, I want it to cycle through artist/track name/album name repeatedly. Or even just an option to choose which I want to display while it plays mp3s.

If I find a setting to do that I'll up my rating to 5 stars.

EDIT:
I have now found how to change the display settings for mp3 track info. I can now select artist/track/album as required, pressing same button cycles through each. If Amazon would let me I would up my review from 4 to 5 stars.
