TOMTOM Start 2 September 6, 2010 Bagpuss Living abroad and only flitting back and too to the UK we found that we were having to spend too much time downloading maps and making sure we had directions of where we wanted to go to before we flew in. The TOMTOM Start2 has changed all that - marvelous gadget to have. Compact to put in hand luggage and quick and simple to set up when you get your hire car!! A good buy and definitely recommended
This is a review of TomTom Customer Services! September 5, 2010 Ned Middleton (British professional underwater photo-journalist & author) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I already have a TomTom satellite navigation system and use it regularly. I rate this as a 5 Star product. I shall soon be travelling extensively throughout Europe by road and recently saw an opportunity to purchase a spare unit quite cheaply at a sale. Although an older model, the unit was still boxed, absolutely complete and appeared to be unused. It would not, however, switch on but, thinking it needed nothing more than charging, I took a chance and bought it.
I tried everything (As did my local store) but the unit simply would not switch on. Eventually, I contacted TomTom Customer Services and told them how the I had obtained the unit and that it was "NOT" under guarantee. Their service was exceptional. Firstly, they sent me a small package containing a cardboard box which, when assembled, fitted my TomTom unit perfectly and would clearly protect the unit whilst in the post. Secondly, the package also contained a Royal Mail "Special Delivery" envelope complete with address and tracking number. Postage and insurance were already paid by TomTom.
Within 24 hours of my posting the unit back to TomTom I received an email confirming receipt and within 7 days I got another unit back. TomTom had REPLACED my unit free of charge with a brand new and exactly the same model and ALL under guarantee!
So for those of you who are contemplating purchasing a TomTom satellite navigation system, I thought you might like to know about this company's follow-up customer services system. They are quite excellent and I hope this message is useful.

Tom Tom Start2 review September 3, 2010 R. Agarwal 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
With Tom Tom Start2, it is a lot easier to drive and find way. £D view helps to follow right lane.
Works, could do more August 29, 2010 Ian W. 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had a Navman for about 3 years until the battery gave out (I broke the cicuit board when installing a new one from ebay.) I tried a new Navman but it was not very good. I returned it and bought this TomTom which appears sturdy and well built, as good as the old Navman and better than the new one. The TomTom speaker is much clearer than the new Navman.
This is one of the cheapest TomTom units and therefore does not have all the features of the more expensive models but a couple of things still niggle me considering the price paid.
It has a few features, like advance lane guidance, that I really like when using it in busy French towns although the habit of reading every road number (French roads can have multiple numbers for the same road) for each turn became a bit confusing and pedantic. On this note I also really wish I could change the habit of it reading the road numbers using the "thousand, hundreds and tens" technique. No one I know would refer to the "A6162" as the "A six thousand one hundred and sixty two." I have to concentrate on what the TomTom says then mentally visualize the number to convert it back to single digits.
I also find it difficult to comprehend the calculated route. There is no method I can find to see a simple list of roads for the route, nor any easy way to check it has found the correct end destination. We programmed it to go to Montreuil. As we tapped part of the name in only one Montreuil was displayed on the quick pop-up list so this was selected. We were well on our way to Montreuil in Paris instead of Montreuil near Calais before we realised the mistake (the first part of the route was the same and then when it headed south we thought it must have found a route to avoid Rouen.) There is an option to display a tiny map of the selected route but the small scale makes this very difficult to use.
Overall I am happy with this TomTom and hope for several years good usage.
Does not do what it says on the box! August 23, 2010 buster 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
TomTom Start2 Satellite Navigation System - Europe
This is our second tomtom, having had a Tomtom 1 go europe for over 3 years. Wanted to tour europe in our motorhome so carefully researched what we needed, maps of all europe and lane guidance because changing lanes in a motorhome can be dangerous. It arrived and plugged it in to do the free map update which is where things rapidly deteriorated. The device does not have enough memory for the latest european maps and we then could have either western or eastern european but not both - spent ages on the phone to tomtom tech support and they eventually admitted that the product could not do what it purported to and therefore was useless for our purposes. Worse, you could not restore the original maps and lost all the add ons like safety cameras once you had switched maps. All in all very frustrating causing rows with spouse, computer rage and a wasted five hours trying to resolve it. Having said that the guys at Tomtom were really helpful, as were the customer services at Amazon so it is going back for a full refund.....
