5 out of 5 stars This is a review of TomTom Customer Services!   September 5, 2010
Ned Middleton (British professional underwater photo-journalist & author)

I already have a TomTom satellite navigation system and use it regularly. I rate this as a 5 Star product. I shall soon be travelling extensively throughout Europe by road and recently saw an opportunity to purchase a spare unit quite cheaply at a sale. Although an older model, the unit was still boxed, absolutely complete and appeared to be unused. It would not, however, switch on but, thinking it needed nothing more than charging, I took a chance and bought it.

I tried everything (As did my local store) but the unit simply would not switch on. Eventually, I contacted TomTom Customer Services and told them how the I had obtained the unit and that it was "NOT" under guarantee. Their service was exceptional. Firstly, they sent me a small package containing a cardboard box which, when assembled, fitted my TomTom unit perfectly and would clearly protect the unit whilst in the post. Secondly, the package also contained a Royal Mail "Special Delivery" envelope complete with address and tracking number. Postage and insurance were already paid by TomTom.

Within 24 hours of my posting the unit back to TomTom I received an email confirming receipt and within 7 days I got another unit back. TomTom had REPLACED my unit free of charge with a brand new and exactly the same model and ALL under guarantee!

So for those of you who are contemplating purchasing a TomTom satellite navigation system, I thought you might like to know about this company's follow-up customer services system. They are quite excellent and I hope this message is useful.

4 out of 5 stars My First sat nav   August 31, 2010

I won't be able to make any comparisons to other makes or models of sat nav in this review as this is the only one I have actually used. After a disastrous (but in the same way quite funny) trip to Meadowhall I decided it was about time to invest in a sat nav. After reading may Amazon reviews I was well and truly confused as there seemed like a lot of criticism for most models. Of course everyone will have different experiences with their machine and I accept my opinion too may change over time, but after my first week with the TomTom Start 2 I am seriously impressed and confident I selected the right product for me.

Pros;
Quick to find a signal and plan routs.
3D map and other information displayed is great.
Clearly spoken instructions, reading the street names is a nice touch.
Suction cup works well for me.
Compact design makes it easy to store.
Mac compatible.
Changeable covers is a nice extra.

Cons;
Searching for a place can be a pain. Using postcodes is fine if you know it otherwise you need to enter city, then street name or a point of interest. I couldn't find Ikea in Leeds on my device so had to look up the postcode first on my laptop (no good if I'm out!)
You can alter a route by by selecting a road to go via, but you can only select one per journey.
Can't save preferred routs to the device.
Browsing maps can be a little tricky as the touch screen is not as good as the iPhone (to be expected!)

Overall this comes highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sat Nav, working straight from the box!   August 30, 2010

This Sat Nav has been used a few times now since I bought it and it worked as soon as I got it out of the box. It is so straightforward and easy to use, I even ordered one for my mother-in-law who's also pleased. For her it has given her the confidence to go on the motorway which she usually avoids, and for me it has got me to places I would have had a problem getting to without it! Even my husband is borrowing it now! I also like the fact that you can see the road names coming up so you feel sure you're in the right place and the Sat Nav tells you the name of the road you need to turn into next. It also beeps to let you know about speed cameras. Fantastic and highly recommended!

Good service from amazon, TomTom start 2 is disapointing as it no longer has the ability to pre- view a route selected by the unit, this feature was available on the original start sat nav. To read a map using the touch screen is delicate and often the map will change. The Start2 Sat nav is not as user friendly as the original Start. Enclosed instruction manual is too abbreviated.
On the plus side are the location of traffic cameras and audible naming of street names.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS - GET THE TOMTOM ONE INSTEAD   August 25, 2010

I am extremely disappointed with this product, I bought the TomTom One and it was stolen and that appears to have been discontinued and replaced by Start 2 but TomTom still have the cheek to charge the same price when the One had far more functionality. For example, the TomTom One had a headphone jack which meant you could listen to the instructions and get you could see a detail list of the directions and change parts of it that you would know as a regular driver to avoid. Start2 had neither of these functions. There are other features that are missing and a response from TomTom states that Start2 is a simplified version, well if that is the case, dont charge the same price!!!!!
