Tomtom XL IQ Routes UK & RoI July 22, 2010 Ade Best The wide screen gives a clear display, and the speed-related volume feature is useful; the mounting system is also easy to use. Another plus - the HOME software hasn't been the grief that some other reviewers led me to expect, and so far has worked as intended.
However, there have been a couple of times when using the postcode and postal address method of selecting destination where I ended up, well, not where expected. Not all postal numbers are listed, either.
If these machines were dirt cheap, then OK, that might be taken a bit more philosophically, but given the price point generally, and this model in particular, disappointing.
The `I want to go there' (then prod screen) method seems to be much more reliable (in the `Navigate to...' menus as Point on Map), although if you know where you're going, does this not defeat the object?
No. Its redeeming facility is the ability to guide the solo driver unerringly through unfamiliar towns or cities en route, especially older market towns, which can be tortuous, when otherwise it might be easy to go horribly wrong. To me - and so far, so good - this remains its party piece.
The manual is decidedly skimpy, and gives only basic instructions. Nevertheless, it's enough to get you started. Overall, then, almost there, but not a perfect score, due to the postcode and address inaccuracy indicated above. Perhaps this can be sorted with future software updates.
tomtom xl io June 5, 2010 rec 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
purchased this model but unfortunately when updating the unit became corrupt, a soft restart failed to rectify this, spoke to tomtom and a nice young lady advised me that there is a known problem with the update software, she did try to talk me through resetting everying, even deleting the files and reinstalling them before telling me they, tomtom, have stopped shipping this meodel until they can rectify the update problem, I purchased the xl classing which updated perfectly and works fine, so avoid this model until tomtom have sorted it.
Great sat nav May 19, 2010 Mister G (South Wales) Tom Tom wins again over any competition. This unit offers itinary planning and route review with the option of avoiding any part of the suggested route easily, add to this the IQ system, map update etc and there really isn't any choice, if you're looking for Sat Nav buy TomTom!!
Needs careful positioning on dashboard May 16, 2010 Roy Clare (Essex, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I nearly sent this back because the GPS took so long to lock-in (sometimes 20 or 30 minutes!), then I discovered that satellite fixes could be obtained faster (within 30 seconds!) when the unit is placed much nearer the windscreen in the centre of the dashboard, with the top edge angled towards the glass, so that the receiver has the best possible 'view' of the sky.
Since I tumbled to this, the unit has performed perfectly. The puzzle is why this version of the Tom Tom is so fussy: I had an earlier model (without wide-screen) that worked well wherever I put it in the car.
Anyhow, a good product - once it works.
Works great! May 3, 2010 Andrew Hornsby (UK) Does everything I'd expect, and very easy to setup.
Haven't had any of the problems with satellites that other people mention. Also have not found the USB connector difficult to insert or remove. You just push it in, and pull it out!
