Fully recommended! Good kit.... September 7, 2010 Mr. Malcolm E. Carson (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received a Satmap 10 Plus complete with 1:50,000 for my birthday last month...aren't I a lucky boy? Especially as I now realise how much the system costs. What can I say? It's a wonderful piece of navigation assistance. So far I have carried out a couple of 10 to 15 mile walks in my local area having planned them myself on the PC using SatSynch. Perfect - very impressed. I have also just started Geocaching and have logged my first 7 caches with ease. The Satmap 10 took me to 'the door'. In a week the wife and I intend to carry out the Wainright Coast to Coast walk from Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay - about 195 miles. I have already prepared the entire route using the on-line mapping facility and transferred it to the Satmap 10. Really looking forward to the trip and I have total confidence that this baby will support my 'standard map reading' skills using a 1.25,000 paper map. As I tinker with the buttons and the guide I continue to find useful items which the Satmap 10 contains. The battery life is wonderful and I use the rechargeable battery pack. Every time I look at the 'charge remaining' counter it hasn't moved. Well done Satmap 10 Plus - you get my vote. And thanks very much Amazon...it could have cost 'she that must be obeyed' a lot more had she bought it elsewhere.
Others are catching up fast August 12, 2010 I. Harper (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Satmap was pretty much the first to market with usable OS maps on a GPS device nearly three years ago. At the time, this was revolutionary, but now it is becoming standard and this unit is rapidly being overhauled by the competition. It has a few notable weak spots:
Price - the unit price plus full UK OS mapping brings the total cost over £500. Compare this with the brand new Garmin Gpsmap 62s + OS mapping for £399.
GPS sensitivity - the device is notoriously slow to acquire satellites from a "cold" start. It is outperformed by most GPS enabled phones in this respect. Is that acceptable at this price point?
Battery indicator - virtually useless and potentially dangerous, will go from indicating full charge to empty with no warning. This problm has not been resolved by any software updates
The Active 10 Plus package seems designed to reheat an ageing device rather than offering anything radically new.
To remain competitive, Satmap need to look at their pricing and introduce a new model. In the meantime, the expense of the current unit is looking increasingly hard to justify.
Excellent piece of kit August 10, 2010 Cenedlaetholwr 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been thinking about buying a GPS unit for mountain walking for some time, but none of those I'd seen or heard of seemed that attractive. When I first heard of the Satmap I thought it was too good to be true. Recent reviews were very complimentary and I found a few individuals who had purchased one - all experiences were positive. So, I decided to take the plunge. A month later and several trips and the unit really does what it says on the packet. It is very difficult to fault it, apart from one very minor point - the 'beeps' are very quiet and hardly audible. I hace contaced Satmap about this and they have no suggestions. I suspect that the frequency is too high and so not audible to older hearing. For me, this is not a practical problem as I do not miss this facility.
Map live orientation is really very good, as is the ability to use the unit in anything from night time (using the red filter) to bright sunlight. It is very sensitive to the GPS signals, gets a lock very quickly, is very accurate (within a few feet, literally) and the battery-pack really does give more than enough charge for a whole day's use.
The maps seem expensive at first sight, but when you work out the number of maps you get on a card then it is a lot cheaper than buying the paper ones.
All in all, this is an excellent purchase for anyone who spends time in the hills - with 1:25,000 maps available for almost any area in UK or Europe that you are likely to visit.

This is just the product I have been waiting for, for years no more getting lost in the hills, or any other walk! when you loose your path. I only wish you sold all the maps including all the county series eg Greater London Kent East Sussex etc etc
Nice piece of kit July 26, 2010 Riphja (Kent) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this product on the strength of the previous reviews. Despite not having any previous experience, I managed to get to understand the concept and eventually managed to download or input walks from websites/manually.
Once the walks are in the internal memory or SD card, then it is a very nice peice of equipment to take with you on a walk. I am new to walking/hiking and would only have taken on a number of recommended walks with this product in my pocket. My walks last about 4/5 hours and I take the satmap with me for a long weekend and the battery is still fine after a couple of walks. Easy to recharge anyway from computer or mains lead which are common to a number of cameras etc.
When on a walk, you can tell within minutes that you have drifted off course and are able to rectify it immediately. Very hand if the directions in the walking book are not as accurate as they could be, or indeed the gates etc have been moved or taken away completely. Having inputted waypoints on for a walk recently, I followed the instructions in the book but lost my way slightly when at the top of a hill. The satmap corrected me and led me to a railway sleeper that bridged a small stream that I couldn't even see at the time. Excellent.
Furthermore, compass included in the software as is a very clear triup log which can be reset for each walk and includes time walked, distance elapsed, average speed, altitude and even the time of sunset that day.
A very sturdy product that once you have mastered, will be a really good addition to any walkers rucksack.
Highly recommended.
